I think the text in this scan might be a bit too small to read. That’s why I’ve typed it out for you. I hope you’ll all enjoy this list just as much as I did.

Favorite color? White

Favorite color for evening wear? Black or red. Solid colors, no flowers, prints or ruffles, except the one time she wore a beautiful Givenchy-designed, pink sari-style evening dress, when she substituted for Mother Teresa as a presenter at the 1992 Oscars.

Ice cream? Chocolate

Treat? Baking chocolate

Movie? In later years, Witness, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, E.T., and The Princess Bride (she also had the soundtrack). But in general, Audrey didn’t talk about films, let alone her own.

Favorite poem? According to Gregory Peck, it was ”Unending Love,” by Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Favorite actress? Anything with Michelle Pfeiffer, Meryl Streep, Cher, or Julia Roberts in it.

Music? According to Rob, ”Audrey liked well-ordered music. She liked Bach very much, but found it difficult to have music on unless she could sit and listen to it. She loved jazz and George Shearing’s music.”

Public figure most admired? Gandhi and the Dalai Lama

Guilty pleasure? She loved American television shows. Living in Switzerland especially in the early years, they could not get them, but Robert Wolders’s sister lived in Holland, where they got the programs, and they used to send tapes. Audrey said that ”L.A. Law was so wonderful because the ensemble acting between the people is so good. Only in America would people have the opportunity to really develop a character because they work with the same people day in and out.” Audrey also got a kick out of watching Dynasty.

Favorite authors? Graham Greene, Tom Wolfe, Jeffrey Archer, Willa Cather, Lawrence Sanders. In her twenties, she loved Rudyard Kipling’s work. Although she spoke several languages-English, Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish-and wrote notes to Hubert in French, she read in English for relaxation. During the UNICEF years, she didn’t have much time to read because she was always trying to keep up to date with the UN publications and the reports from the field.

Politics? Became more involved with politics because of UN work. Robert Wolders believes ”she had always been political to a great extent.”

Favorite artist? El Greco, Mary Cassatt. The bulk of the paintings in her home were by Bob Kane. Audrey also drew and sketched beautifully herself.

Two things that would surprise us about Audrey? ”She had great legs!” laughs Bob Willoughby. Audrey also loved shopping malls; that was the first thing she wanted to do when she visited Rob’s family in Rochester. She loved the concept of it, and she liked to buy gifts for friends that you could not get in Europe. She loved the Gap to buy baby clothes because the Gap did not exist in Europe then.

Personal philosophy? ”Childishly optimistic.” Audrey always felt that everything would be all right at the end.

odetojohn:

For Mothers

A relationship between a mother and her child is like no other. Mothers nurture us, soothe us, scold us, teach us - know us better than anyone else. Raising a child is a lifelong journey, as it never truly ends; there will always be days when we just need our moms. They shape us into who we grow up to be, so it’s only natural that we inherit certain elements of their personality. A mother’s sense of style holds a special place in her child’s heart, as it reminds us of a simpler time. The smell of her perfume, the jacket she wore to fancy parties, her favourite pair of gardening shoes – they’re all wrapped in the warm, rose-coloured glow of childhood. Her style staples are a comfort and provide us with a grounding continuity in the ever-changing world of fashion. So in honour of stylish mothers everywhere today, we’ve picked out four whose iconic wardrobes are surely treasures within their own families.

1. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

The pinnacle of chic, Jackie’s style continues to maintain aspirational status for women everywhere. In the sixties, her look was a mix of mod and traditional, with pastel suits, pillbox hats, and heirloom strands of pearls. The style was immortalized in the history pages as the standard by which Americana fashions to follow would forever be measured against. In the seventies, Jackie transitioned to a more streamlined uniform of shrunken tees, white jeans, espadrilles, silk scarves, and wore her hair pulled back in an effortlessly chic bun.

2. Grace Kelly

The Hollywood starlet who would go on to enchant the Prince of Monaco with her icy blonde charm, and later bear the heirs to the Principality’s throne. It was the influence of Alfred Hitchcock that initially catapulted her from ingénue to icon, while Hermés went so far as to name one of their most coveted and sought-after luxury products in her honour – the Kelly bag. Her look was clean, classic, and simple, and despite being royalty, she understood the value of practicality. Shirtwaist dresses, low-heeled shoes, hats with little veils and even horn-rimmed glasses which she wore for her nearsightedness – no matter what the part, Grace was always the epitome of taste in her outfit selection.

3. Audrey Hepburn

Hepburn’s pixie haircuts, heavy brows, and big, doe eyes redefined what it meant to be fashionable for an entire generation. Her sense of compassion and pragmatism were shaped by the hardship and suffering of the Second World War. She was a dancer by trade, which accounted for her waif-like figure, but fell into acting. She is perhaps best known for the iconic little black dress she wore in the opening credits of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, designed by lifelong friend Hubert de Givenchy, who was also responsible for helping to perfect her minimalist chic look. She was a purveyor of headscarves, oversized sunglasses and flats (Salvatore Ferragamo designed a shoe for her). She also liked to carry around a basket as a purse – a testament to her joie de’vivre, her fondness for strolling through gardens and her love of perusing outdoor markets.

4. Princess Diana

Known for her philanthropy, kindness, and the never ending scandal that surrounded her marriage, Princess Diana’s style was quintessential English rose injected with a pop of eighties vibrance. She loved colour, wide-shouldered gowns, body-skimming silhouettes, opulent choker necklaces, and of course, was responsible for popularizing the ashy blonde, pageboy hairstyle that defined the era. There was an intrinsic elegance to her that allowed her to pull off even the most grandiose of designs (her wedding gown had a train of 25 feet, after all), as she was always sure to accessorize with her best asset – a winning smile.

So here’s to moms everywhere, and to mine in particular – for letting me “borrow” from your expansive accessory collection – I love you so much!

xo
